  FAQ

An effective measure to prevent check loss is a good defense at the point-of-sale (POS). Check writer databases and real-time verification can often reduce the number of uncollectible and fraudulent bad check writers at the register. Your investment in these services is dependent on whether it makes good financial sense after evaluating your check volume, average check size and demographics.

Cash Flow Solutions offers several solutions to reduce your returned checks by stopping habitual bad check writers at the POS. We customize a negative check writer database for your stores or provide access to various national verification services.

Negative Check Writer Database

Many of our merchants choose to house an internal check writer database instead of accessing a national verification service. Cash Flow's IT Team integrates a custom negative check writer file to your POS system based on your specific needs. The database is transmitted to a secure FTP site on a daily basis.

Advantages of an in-house, negative check writer database:

  No costs to qualifying merchants
  No purchase of equipment
Personal oversight and control of check writer database

National Check Network (NCN)

NCN is a low cost way to avoid bad checks before you accept them. Verification terminals located at the POS access a national database containing over 120,000 participating merchants. Checks are scanned at the POS and the database alerts your business to customers with outstanding returned checks nationwide or with high volumes of recent activity. The debt must be resolved in order to be removed from the list.

  Using NCN verification:

Generates a low transaction cost for each check verification
Removes the guessing out of check acceptance
Protects merchants from habitual bad check writers
  Verifies working bank routing numbers

Early Warning

Early warning is used to prevent fraud by confirming that a checking account has a positive balance at the time of sale. This service protects merchants from high risk checks and promotes an alternate, lower risk payment method for the transaction. Early Warning is typically bundled with NCN verification services as a secondary prevention strategy for fraudulent checks.

The advantages of Early Warning include:

Fewer losses from high risk checks
Ensures that checking accounts are good before accepting
Protection for high fraud locations or specific industries
